Pilonidal Cyst Excision

Pilonidal Cyst Excision

Pilonidal cyst excision is a surgical procedure performed to remove a pilonidal cyst, which is a painful, fluid-filled sac that typically develops near the tailbone at the top of the buttocks. Pilonidal cysts can be caused by hair follicles becoming blocked and infected, leading to the formation of an abscess or cyst. When conservative treatments such as antibiotics or draining the cyst fail to provide relief or when the cyst becomes recurrent or infected, surgical intervention may be necessary. During the excision procedure, the surgeon makes an incision to access and remove the cyst along with any infected tissue or debris. The area is then cleaned and, in some cases, left open to heal from the inside out or closed with sutures, depending on the size and severity of the cyst.

After pilonidal cyst excision, patients may experience some pain and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medications. The healthcare team will provide instructions on wound care and hygiene, including how to keep the surgical site clean and promote healing. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to minimize the risk of infection and promote proper healing. Recovery time can vary, but most patients can resume regular activities within a few weeks. Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor healing and address any concerns that may arise.
