Gastric Volvulus
Gastric volvulus is a rare condition in which the stomach twists or rotates abnormally, leading to a partial or complete obstruction of the stomach. This twisting can disrupt blood flow to the stomach and cause symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty passing gas or having a bowel movement. Gastric volvulus can occur due to various factors, including an abnormally loose or mobile stomach, an enlarged organ, or anatomical abnormalities.
Gastric volvulus is a medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Treatment often involves decompression of the stomach and sometimes emergency surgery to untwist the stomach and restore blood flow. In some cases, surgical procedures may be performed to prevent future episodes of volvulus by attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall (gastropexy) or addressing the underlying causes, such as repairing a hiatal hernia. The specific treatment approach depends on the severity of the volvulus and the individual's overall health. It's important to seek prompt medical care if you experience symptoms suggestive of gastric volvulus to prevent potential complications such as tissue damage or reduced blood supply to the stomach.
